8/28- Collage Process

I have been very excited about this collage process! An interesting thing about my process has been how my main idea has changed throughout it! It started with simply aiming to represent myself and the different things that I like and bring me joy. However, when I went to the library to find different images to scan and utalize that idea shifted. Now, I am trying to focus on the different women who came before me- from ancient times to now, and how the world's relationship to womanhood is always changing. Something that I am really excited about is how I collected different images of woman but covered each of their heads with flowers, including a current photo of me. The only image that lacks this "flower head" is a childhood photo of me- intending to be a commentary that the only time a woman is free to live her life on her terms is when she is child and has not been exposed to the constraints and opinions on the world. I hope that my collage, aided by my reflection, wi...

Five Artist Self-Portraits: Reflection

Through this assignment, I was first introduced to the LCE capacities- notably notice deeply, pose questions, make connections, live with ambiguity, identify patterns, empathize, reflect/assess, embody, create meaning, and take action. In each reflection, I aim to mention aspects of each of the capacities, without necessarily naming each capacity each time. John Wilson There are a lot of interesting things to notice in this piece. Upon first glance, the clearest thing that stuck out to me was the "sketchy" art style. Additionally, the detail in the face can be easily contrasted to the more geometric door and window. It is intriguing that the only thing with shading on it is the face- and I could guess that this is to emphasize the blackness of Wilson. By having the eye be immediately drawn to the face, it not only emphasizes himself but also celebrates his blackness. Susan Hauptman With a first glance, this piece looks almost otherworldly. The collage style of the piece is ve...

8/25: Artistic Expression in Collage

Image
The overarching theme in today's class was artistic expression in all of its different formats. From the seemingly unconnected 'Fall of Jake Paul' to the experimental concert, there are many different forms of expression that were covered. This was especially inspiring as I sat down to start my collage project.  Admittedly, I was definitely overwhelmed when the assignment was first given. The lack of clear parameters, with only the topic of "Self Portrait" to go off of has certainly pushed my perfectionist instincts to the max, and has challenged me to think outside of the box! For example, today I took a trip to the library and looked through their collection of bound periodicals and reference books. I got so much inspiration (and many scanned photos!) to use in my collage. This trip helped me focus in my clear idea outside of a simple self-portrait- the importance of all the women that came before me.  I am now so excited about this project, and cannot wait to k...
